Gilmore Girls and books simply go together. And a Gilmore Girls themed readathon is the most wonderful thing that could ever happen in a bookworm’s life.
I’ve never participated in a readathon before, but just this past week or so, Liv’s Library posted a YouTube video announcing a Gilmore Girls readathon, and there was no question about whether or not I would be participating in this. The readathon is hosted by Olivia from Liv’s Library, Pastel Pages, and Mackenzie Lane. It will be running from October 1st through October 15th with 7 challenges:
• A book with a school setting: in honor of Yale & Chilton
• A mother/daughter relationship book: in honor of our favorite mother/daughter relationship ever.
• Any cozy book set during fall/winter: in honor of beautiful Stars Hollow & Lorelai smelling snow.
• A book with complicated love interests: in honor of Rory, Dean & Jess.
• A book by an Asian author or has Asian representation: in honor of our favorite best friend, Lane.
• The next book in a series you haven’t finished yet: in honor of A Year in The Life.
• A book with food on the cover or is a crucial part of the storyline: in honor of Luke’s Cafe.
If you prefer, you can choose to read books from Rory’s Booklist instead of from the challenges listed above.
I’m so excited about this challenge! After careful thought and consideration, I’ve come up with a booklist that follow the above 7 challenges, respectively:
- Rotherweird by Andrew Caldecott
Goodreads Synopsis: The town of Rotherweird stands alone – there are no guidebooks, despite the fascinating and diverse architectural styles cramming the narrow streets, the avant grade science and offbeat customs. Cast adrift from the rest of England, Rotherweird’s independence is subject to one disturbing condition: nobody, by nobody, studies the town or its history. For beneath the enchanting surface lurks a secret so dark that it must never be rediscovered. Two inquisitive outsiders have arrived: Jonah Oblong, to teach modern history at Rotherweird School (nothing local and nothing before 1800), and the sinister billionaire Sir Veronal Slickstone, who has somehow got permission to renovate the town’s long-derelict Manor House. Both strive to connect past and present, until they and their allies are drawn into a race against time – and each other.
- Where’d You Go Bernadette by Maria Semple
Goodreads Synopsis: Bernadette Fox has vanished. When her daughter Bee claims a family trip to Antarctica as a reward for perfect grades, Bernadette throws herself into preparations for the trip. But worn down by years of trying to live the Seattle life she never wanted, Ms. Fox is on the brink of a meltdown. And after a school fundraiser goes disastrously awry at her hands, she disappears, leaving her family to pick up the pieces—which is exactly what Bee does, weaving together an elaborate web of emails, invoices, and school memos that reveals a secret past Bernadette has been hiding for decades.
- The Sign of Four by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Goodreads Synopsis: When a beautiful woman is sent a letter inviting her to a sinister assignation, she immediately seeks the advice of the consulting detective Sherlock Holmes. For this is not the first mysterious item Mary Marston has received in the post. Every year for the last six years an anonymous benefactor has sent her a large lustrous pearl. Now it appears the sender of the pearls would like to meet her to right a wrong. But when Sherlock Holmes and Watson, aiding Miss Marston, attend the assignation, they embark on a dark and mysterious adventure involving a one-legged ruffian, some hidden treasure, deadly poison darts and a thrilling race along the River Thames.
- The Paris Wife by Paula McLain
Goodreads Synopsis: The Paris Wife captures a remarkable period of time and a love affair between two unforgettable people: Ernest Hemingway and his wife Hadley. Though deeply in love, the Hemingways are ill prepared for the hard-drinking and fast-living life of Jazz Age Paris, which hardly values traditional notions of family and monogamy. Surrounded by beautiful women and competing egos, Ernest struggles to find the voice that will earn him a place in history, pouring all the richness and intensity of his life with Hadley and their circle of friends into the novel that will become The Sun Also Rises. Hadley, meanwhile, strives to hold on to her sense of self as the demands of life with Ernest grow costly and her roles as a wife, friend, and muse become more challenging.
- Legend by Marie Lu
Goodreads Synopsis: What was once the Western United States is now home to the Republic, a nation perpetually at war with its neighbors. Born into an elite family in one of the Republic’s wealthiest districts, fifteen-year-old June is a prodigy being groomed for success in the Republic’s highest military circles. Born into the slums, fifteen-year-old Day is the country’s most wanted criminal. But his motives may not be as malicious as they seem. From very different worlds, June and Day have no reason to cross paths — until the day June’s brother is murdered and Day becomes the prime suspect. But in a shocking turn of events, the two uncover the truth of what has really brought them together, and the sinister lengths their country will go to keep its secrets.
- The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest by Stieg Larsson
Goodreads Synopsis: Lisbeth Salander lies in critical condition in the intensive care unit of a Swedish city hospital. She’s fighting for her life in more ways than one. With the help of her friend, she will not only have to prove her innocence, but also identify and denounce those in authority who have allowed the vulnerable to suffer abuse and violence. Once upon a time, she was a victim. Now Salander is fighting back.
- Eat Pray Love by Elizabeth Gilbert
Goodreads Synopsis: Around the time Elizabeth Gilbert turned thirty, she went through an early-onslaught midlife crisis. She had everything an educated, ambitious American woman was supposed to want — a husband, a house, a successful career. But instead of feeling happy and fulfilled, she was consumed with panic, grief, and confusion. She went through a divorce, a crushing depression, another failed love, and the eradication of everything she ever thought she was supposed to be. To recover from all this, Gilbert took a radical step. She got rid of her belongings, quit her job, and undertook a yearlong journey around the world — all alone.
Not sure if I’ll be able to read all of these books in 15 days (probably not), but it will be fun keeping up with everyone’s TBR and progress! If you wanna participate, you can follow the Gilmore Girls Readathon on Twitter and Instagram. Let me know in the comments below and follow me on Goodreads to keep up to date with what I’ve been reading.
What books are on your TBR??
Can you believe I have never seen the Gilmore Girls? LOL everyone keeps tell me to watch, but haven’t got around to it. I love these book recommendations tho. I won’t read them in 15 days, but it’s nice to have something to look forward to at the library. 🙂 Hope you are well. ❤
