Tasmania, Australia | Great Eastern Drive

The past couple of months have consisted of nonstop traveling. I think it’s official that I don’t want to set foot on a plane for a while. But the long lines, flight delays, and security checks are all worth it, especially after visiting such a beautiful place like Tasmania.

My first visit to Tasmania was a couple years ago when we climbed Mt. Wellington. I absolutely fell in love with the area and our second visit did not disappoint. This time we had time to do the Great Eastern Drive which is renown for a beautiful scenic drive from Hobart that leads right to the Bay of Fires near St. Helens.

Tasmania is the smallest state in Australia, so traveling around doesn’t take too much time. My husband and I were able to drive up and down the Great Eastern Drive in a couple days and still have time to make stops for scenic shots.

We started off at 6 a.m. so that we could catch the sunrise. We stopped for breakfast in Sorell where I probably had the best eggs Benedict ever. I charged my camera battery there because apparently it died after I had already charged it. It must have been the cold weather that drained it.

Then we headed out to our first main destination: Wineglass Bay. The hike up wasn’t too bad, maybe 40 minutes each way. It definitely is more beautiful in person, and maybe when it’s not winter we can walk the actual beach.

As we were heading back to the car, we encountered a couple of wallabies! They were so adorable and not afraid of humans at all. They were even licking our hands! Such an awesome experience.

Then we made our way to St. Helens where we would spend the night. Of course, we stopped at different sights along the way and wherever the food was.

The next morning, we got up early to catch the sunrise at Binalong Bay.

Then we got breakfast at a Lifebuoy Cafe & Quail Street Emporium, a cute little cafe/vintage shop. I got the French toast which was topped with bacon and banana. So glad there are so many gluten-free options around now!

Our next stop was Bay of Fires. The views were absolutely breathtaking!

I could’ve spend hours there. The orange rocks contrasting with the blue water, I just couldn’t get enough of it. As much as we both wanted to stay a bit longer, we had to start making our way back to Hobart.

Along the way, the ocean contrasting with the white sand and the water crashing into the rocks was so relaxing. I just wanted to take pictures of it all!

We kept driving, enjoying the scenic views until we got to Swansea where we stopped for a quick lunch. One of the cafes had a shelf with secondhand books for $2, so I got a couple: The Spy Game and The Crooked House by Agatha Christie.

We didn’t want our 2-day road trip to end just yet, so we stopped at a beach along the way, Spiky Beach. The terrain was such a contrast: dry, brown, rocky ground contrasted with the blue ocean and crashing waves. We hiked up to the top of the rock and just looked down at how powerful the waves were crashing into the rocks.

At this point, we were ready to head back home. Road trips are fun, but they always leave you a bit drained. I’m hoping to do this trip again sometime in the summer one year and maybe head towards Launceston to see the lavender fields!
